Anaphylaxis Management

If you have allergies, you probably already know how the symptoms can make you feel. Taking care of yourself by managing your allergies is important to your health. Keeping yourself as free from symptoms as possible can increase your enjoyment of life, as well as your health.

There are some allergens that are commonly hidden, and it may be hard to avoid in all circumstances. Food, medication, latex, and insect stings, are easy to be exposed to accidentally. When this happens, it can turn into a medical emergency that can be life threatening. Anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction that can cause death, is most commonly caused by accidental exposure to the allergens that should be avoided.

Anaphylaxis management is possible. If you have known allergies to food, medication, latex, or insect stings, you need to be prepared so you know how to handle an emergency. Having a plan, just in case of accidental exposure, may be the difference between life and death.

Anaphylaxis management involves:
  • Including your doctor, pharmacist, family members, friends and anyone else you are with regularly. Education about anaphylaxis is the best way to begin.
  • Having in your possession an EpiPen (epinephrine injection) for immediate use to help with the symptoms.
  • Knowing who to call for medical help. If there is a 911 system available, that is the best choice for fast response.
  • Avoiding any allergens that give you symptoms.

Anaphylaxis management is also important if you have ever experienced anaphylaxis symptoms, even if the cause is unknown. Being prepared for an emergency can give you the peace of mind you will need to act quickly and with the confidence that you are doing what's best for the situation.
